How it was made:

Base and Bowl fresh from the molds casted with papercrete.  This needs to cure from 2 weeks for bowl and 4 weeks for base.

grouting, 2 colors a dark grey for center, which is done and taped over while applying 2nd grout terracotta.

2 different grout colors, 2 coats of sealer, the white.  Ready for the terracotta paint. 

Nearly done, just level the top and seal the grout on the bowl to waterproof.

About The Artist

Susie Atkinson, SZY, a 32 year resident of Costa Rica, having retired at the age of 70 when I sold Pacific Edge Eco Lodge I needed a hobby to keep my creativity active. Mosaics interested me having always been in some artistic or adventuristic field. I consider myself to be the first "flower child", being born and raised in my mother's flower shop and becoming a florist by 10.  Leaving the nest but still wanting to be my own boss, I worked at several of the Hollywood Blvd department stores doing window dressings and interior displays.  With a move out of Los Angeles city area living the hippy life, I supported myself with Macrame and named that venture "Knotty Things".  Needing more income, I learned silk screen printing and started "Waterfront Productions" and became the first direct printer on T-shirts in the Antelope valley. Wanderlust strikes, I went to LAX and asked what is the next flight to the other side of the world.  Singapore became my new base where I learned to sail and I moved onto a sailboat eventually becoming "Captain Susie" for 10 years.  Finally in 1992, I threw out the anchor here in Costa Rica along with my husband.  We were one of the few gringos in the Escaleras area and built Pacific Edge road and Pacific Edge Eco Lodge, which hosted for 28 years many of the people that now call Costa Rica home.

Mosaics has now became my new hobby and adventure, creating "Fun Functionals" - mosaics that are not just art but functional items.
